Today might be the day we finally see the first ‘shock’ of the tournament. After two days of run-of-the-mill fare (only one team has scored in any of the matches so far), Romania could provide an upset against the French.

No-one likes a gloater but:

…until then, we’ll have to put up with Germany making relatively easy work of Poland and a lively if stuttering and ultimately failing performance from Austria against Croatia…

turned out to be a fairly realistic if slightly obvious prediction. However, in the aftermath of the Germany/Poland game people would do well to remember how well Poland played at times, and their wisdom in trying to quickly switch flanks in an effort to catch Podolski/Fritz out of position. Though somewhat suspect at the back, Poland suggested they may give Croatia more problems than many gave them credit for.

In the months leading up to the tourament Germany was concerned with who would partner Miro Klose - Poldi or Gomez? In the days before the tournament, the question was who would partner Gomez? Now it seems that Podolski is Germany’s greatest threat, though I don’t expect him to come off the left wing anytime soon.
